Thomas and Mary Philipps
He arrived in this country on a date in May 14, 1795--(many say April 1,1796) after a voyage of 44 days from Liverpool, in a British armed ship, the Amphion, manned by by Royal Navy sailors, and Captain Williams, chartered by Theophilus and Thomas and brought with them family and friends. England was at then at war--in those years, England was always at war. Indeed the very ship that brought the Rees-Philipps group to America was to perish off the French coast in battle just four years later.
They brought with them a number of their neighbors who promised to reimburse them for paying their fare as soon as they earned the money in America. They located in a big valley, Chester County, and Pennsylvania, there was a Welsh Settlement, but they remised there only a short time, when they repaired to Beulah Cambria County, Pennsylvania, there Messrs, Rees and Philipps Remained until, 1801, then the purchased two thousand acres of land from Sampson Davis,( The land was nearer to three thousand) a Welshman of Philadelphia, in what is now the northeast quarter of Granville Township, this county, and during the same year Mr. Rees sent his son John to erect a cabin on the property and to clear a portion of it for cultivation, so that the their members of the family should be able to sustain themselves upon their arrival, and the following year they settled upon their purchase, which is known as the Welsh Hills.
What I have found is there is no date for Mary's death but it was in Philadelphia, PA so that would date it any where from 1795-1801.(possibly later as they went to and fro until about 1807, I now have information she died on a business trip to PA, When?) Thomas's Death was May 20,1813, he died here in Welsh Hills, Granville Twp., Licking Co., OH..
I have also found that Thomas ran a wagon line in Philadelphia in 1797. Having this successful business traveled back and forth from Pa. to Ohio for several years.
Theophilus and Thomas, on their journey to Ohio picked up a friendship with a man of the name of Jimmy Johnson a frontiersman, hunter, scout and Indian fighter, and in exchange for his talents (sold or gave) him 100 acres in the Welsh Hills.
